The General Educational Development (or GED) Examination offers anyone who has not completed his or her high school diploma a way to earn a High School Equivalency Certificate. This is the equivalent of a high school diploma, and it is necessary for those who want to continue their education in college or another career-oriented program. High school graduates typically earn much more than high school dropouts. It pays to have a high school diploma.

Many people worry about the difficulty of taking the GED Examination, especially if they’ve been out of school for a long time. What you should realize is that learning continues after you leave school. You read newspapers and follow political events; you travel and talk to many different people; you listen to the radio, watch television, and go to the movies. All of these experiences are forms of learning and add to your educational background.

After reviewing and doing the practice exercises, take the practice tests as follows, and score your results. If your scores are in the category of Good or Excellent, you are probably ready to walk into the examination room with confidence. If, however, you did not attain such scores, do not apply for the GED Examination until you have studied further. Concentrate on the areas in which you are weak.

• Registration: All applicants must create a profile at GED.com. Scheduling and payment are completed at this site.
• Minimum scores: Testers must score a minimum of 145 (out of a possible 200) points on each of the four subtests to pass.
• Retesting: After the initial testing attempt, the test-taker may re-test up to two times in each content area with no wait time between re-tests. After the third attempt, each re-test in an individual content area must be preceded by a 60-day waiting period.
• Transcripts: Original transcripts and certificates are supplied without charge by GEDTS. Duplicate documents are fulfilled through GEDTS Credentialing Service and can be requested by accessing www.ged.com.
• Other languages: A Spanish version of the test is available.
