GED Question Formats

To test a range of skills, the GED® Test uses a variety of computer-based question formats. When you take the test, you will use these question formats:

  • Multiple Choice: Multiple-choice questions typically present you with a scenario and ask a question about it. There is one possible answer out of the four choices provided.
  • Drag and Drop: Drag-and-drop questions ask you to choose from several options and drag each option to the correct location in the question.
  • Hot Spot: These questions present you with information and pose a question. In order to indicate your answer, use your mouse to click on one or several points in a chart or graph that represent possible answers.
  • Fill in the Blank: These questions give you a set of information and ask a question. There are no answers provided, and you have to type in your own answer using your keyboard.
  • Drop Down: It can appear on any of the four tests and is often used to place an answer in the context of a sentence

GED Scoring

For each of the four tests, you will receive a score between 100 and 200. Because each test has a different number of available points, GED Testing Service will standardize your raw scores (or the number of questions you answered correctly for each test) through a scoring metric to yield a score between 100 and 200. It’s important to remember that there is no penalty for wrong answers or questions left blank, so it is to your advantage to record an answer to every question.

GED® Test Score Levels

The number of points a test-taker earns is translated into a scaled score, on a scale of 100 to 200 for each subject test:

  • 100–144: required to Improve
  • 145–164: Pass/High School Equivalency
  • 165–174: GED® College Ready
  • 175–200: GED® College Ready + Credit
